About the Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Short-Term Training
No cost to trainees. Earn while you learn.
Become a Medical Assistant in just 9 months while working part-time honing your skills in a physician practice. Southern Maine Community College has partnered with both MaineHealth and Martin’s Point on this exciting new Medical Assistant short-term training program.
This grant-funded, accelerated program will provide you with paid, on-the-job training and mastery of MA skills learned in the classroom. Participants will work part-time in one of the physician practices while attending classes at SMCC, performing their externship hours, & preparing to take their certification exam upon completion of the program.

Prerequisites
To qualify for this training you must meet the following prerequisites:
- At least 18 years of age
- High school diploma,
GED or HiSet - Resident of Maine
- Proof of authorization to
work in the U.S. - Affected by the pandemic
- Testing may be required
