April is Financial Awareness Month 2025

April is Financial Awareness Month! We use this month to highlight the easy steps students can take to access financial resources and stay on track. Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2025-2026 academic year is the first step! April is Financial Awareness text with pink piggy bank

IF YOU HAVE FILED YOUR FAFSA:

If you have already submitted your FAFSA for the 2025-2026 academic year, please note that we hope to begin reviewing FAFSAs and sending out financial aid offers by late April. Please check your SMCC email regularly for any communication from the Financial Aid Office.

We appreciate your patience during this time and please feel free to contact the Financial Aid Office at  smccfinancialaid@mainecc.edu or 207-741-5518 if you have any questions.

IF YOU STILL NEED TO FILE YOUR FAFSA, NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME!

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

  1. Create your FSA ID: Head to www.studentaid.gov/fsa-id to create your FSA ID and password.  Students and contributors (such as parents/spouses or stepparents) must have an FSA ID. It may take up to 7 days for your ID to be ready for use. You don’t need to create a second one if your parent(s) or spouse already has an FSA ID.
  2. Complete Your 2025-2026 FAFSA Online: Visit studentaid.gov/FAFSA and select the 2025-2026 FAFSA to file for Fall 2025/Spring 2026. Fill out the FAFSA with your personal information and provide consent for FAFSA to gather your applicable 2023 tax information from the IRS. Remember to add SMCC’s School Code: 005525.

Maine State Grant Important Filing Date: File before May 1st, 2025 to be considered for the State of Maine Grant and to meet SMCC’s priority filing date.

If you have any questions or need assistance with your FAFSA filing, don’t hesitate to contact the SMCC Financial Aid Office at  smccfinancialaid@mainecc.edu or by phone at 207-741-5518. Our team is here to help you navigate the process and ensure you have access to the financial aid you need.

GET HELP FROM FINANCE AUTHORITY OF MAINE

At FAME’s FAFSA Help Sessions, they’ll provide a quick FAFSA overview followed by personalized FAFSA filing assistance from FAME and other financial aid experts.

Their goal is to provide you with the necessary support to file the FAFSA that evening! To make that possible, it’s critical that dependent students attend with their parent(s), as it’s no longer possible for a parent to access the FAFSA without both student and parent being present.

Upcoming FAFSA Help Sessions:

Check FAME’s FAFSA page for upcoming sessions.
