Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) proudly announces that Gabe Hoffman-Johnson, founder and chief community officer of Portland Hearts of Pine soccer club, will serve as the distinguished speaker at the College’s 2025 commencement ceremony. The event will take place at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland on Sunday, May 18, beginning at 2 p.m.
Hoffman-Johnson, founder and chief community officer of Portland Hearts of Pine, is a Maine native and lifelong advocate for using soccer as a force for good. Inspired by his family’s deep roots in coaching, community service, and peacebuilding, Hoffman-Johnson launched Hearts of Pine with the mission of building a club that reflects and uplifts Maine’s diverse communities.
“Gabe Hoffman-Johnson’s dedication to community engagement and his innovative vision for building connection through sport are inspiring examples for our graduates,” said SMCC President Kristen Miller. “His work with Hearts of Pine speaks to the power of passion, leadership, and investing in Maine people — values that align deeply with our mission of transforming lives and communities through education and training while welcoming, preparing, and inspiring all to learn, succeed, and lead.”
Portland Hearts of Pine is Maine’s only professional soccer club, founded with a mission to unite, inspire, and elevate communities through the game’s power. Competing in USL League Two, the club is locally owned, community-built, and driven by purpose. With a focus on accessibility, cultural impact, and hometown pride, Hearts of Pine reflects the diverse people and places of Maine while aiming to become a national model for community-centered sports.
